Office 365 email conks out twice within a week

Office 365 email conks out twice within a week
Antivirus issue, infrastructure failures to blame

Microsoft's Office 365 service has suffered two email outages within a week of each other that affected some customers in North and South America that stemmed from different causes but ended in the same result: failed email delivery.

The first outage Nov. 8 stemmed from an overwhelmed antivirus engine and the subsequent backup that caused the service degradation. The second on Nov. 13 resulted from the failure of unspecified network elements, routine maintenance and increased load that combined to degrade service, according to the Office 365 blog posted by Rajesh Jha, the corporate vice president of Microsoft's Office division.

HELP: 11 (FREE!) Microsoft tools to make life easier

NEWS: AT&T offers Microsoft Office 365

He didn't say how many customers were affected or where they were located other than somewhere on the two continents. Both outages affected just Office 365 Exchange Online mail services.

Affected customers are entitled to a service credit. Jha apologizes and promises a post mortem on the outages as well as an update on how the Office 365 service level agreement was affected.

The Nov. 8 incident started when an antivirus engine bogged down as it processed emails that the engine determined carried a particular virus. That delay processing emails led to retries that further bottlenecked email flow including legitimate emails, he says.

The issue was resolved by intercepting the tainted messages and quarantining them directly.

To head off similar problems down the line, the company has set a lower threshold for diverting problem emails and implementing faster remediation tools. It is also adding unspecified safeguards that automate remediation of this type of problem, Jha says.

The second incident Nov. 13 started with some scheduled maintenance that required shifting some of the load out of those data centers undergoing maintenance. During this work unspecified network elements failed but sent no alerts of their failure, he says. And finally the entire infrastructure was handling more traffic from new customers, all of which resulted in some customers being unable to access email services.

Traffic for affected users was shifted to healthy data centers while the issues were dealt with.

Jha says the company is in the midst of increasing capacity and is automating how equipment failures are handled to speed up recovery time.

In addition, the company is reviewing its processes to head off future outages.

"As I've said before," Jha blogs, "all of us in the Office 365 team and at Microsoft appreciate the serious responsibility we have as a service provider to you, and we know that any issue with the service is a disruption to your business - that's not acceptable. I want to assure you that we are investing the time and resources required to ensure we are living up to your - and our own - expectations for a quality service experience every day."

Cisco answers user questions about upcoming Apple Bonjour Gateway

Cisco answers user questions about upcoming Apple Bonjour Gateway
New code will coordinate iOS, OS X client requests over big networks

To cope with the rising tide of iOS devices trying to use Apple's Bonjour discovery protocol on enterprise networks, Cisco recently announced that it is building a Bonjour gateway for its wireless LAN controllers. The company replied to nine follow-up questions after an online webinar for IT professionals about the product.

The gateway is intended to make Bonjour-based technologies like AirPlay and AirPrint better-behaved on enterprise networks. Some webinar attendees came away with some unasked or unanswered questions. Jameson Blandford, a technical marketing engineer with the gateway's product management group, replies via email below. (The webinar reply is available online.)

Cisco CCNA Training, Cisco CCNA Certification

The behavior of Apple products on corporate networks is an urgent issue for many IT groups. Historically, Apple products used to be relegated to niches in big companies. But with the advent of the iPhone and now the iPad, most large U.S. companies have become Apple customers on a scale never before imagined. These devices use Bonjour, which is Apple's implementation of "zero configuration networking" or zeroconf, which is a group of open Layer 2 protocols to automatically and quickly set up an IP network, without having to set up services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, DNS and DNS Service Directory.

Apple devices use Bonjour to discover and link with each other, with printers running Apple's AirPrint software, and with devices like the Apple TV box, which acts like an interface between client iOS and OS X devices and flat panel TVs or selected Internet video content providers.

But Bonjour is designed for simple, single networks, not more complex corporate networks that may include scores or hundreds of subnets. It's not routable, and it can generate very heavy amounts of broadcast traffic over big networks with lots of Apple clients and services. A group of higher-education IT managers, part of Educause, recently created a petition asking Apple to make changes in Bonjour and other technologies to address these issues.

Cisco's new code will turn its WLAN controllers into a Bonjour gateway, and couple this with policy-based end user privileges. For users, this will mean that Apple clients will be able to find and access network-attached AirPrint printers, Apple TVs and the like on different subnets, so everything will "just work" as it does on their own home networks. A second expected result will be a big decrease in the amount of Bonjour-based discovery traffic that today is putting a heavy load on enterprise nets teeming with Apple's MacBook laptops, iPhones, iPads and more.

Aerohive released in July an update to its HiveOS WLAN software, now incorporating a Bonjour gateway. Aruba Networks will ship a similar product, announced in March, before year-end.

After the Cisco webinar, IT professionals raised a number of questions about Cisco's implementation. Here are the questions and Blandford's answers.

Some of Cisco's support documentation for dealing with Bonjour mentions the Avahi software, an open-source zeroconf implementation. Is Cisco's pending Bonjour Gateway based on, or incorporate-and-make-use-of Avahi?

The gateway is not based on Avahi.

The webinar's demo showed wireless clients, but didn't seem to address wired clients, such as a wired Apple TV. Will the Cisco gateway handle wired Bonjour devices?

The Bonjour Services Directory will snoop for devices on both the wireless and wired-side of the network. [For example,] when a client on the wireless side of the network requests the "AirPlay" service, the controller will return back both the Apple TV on the wired network, and the Apple TV on the wireless network.

Will customers need to have a wireless LAN controller on each routing node in the network, to ensure that VLANs (subnets) can reach the controller? If VLANs cross a Layer 3 boundary, will a controller be needed to terminate them?

In the initial release, the VLAN of wired Bonjour devices must be trunked to the [WLAN] controller so that their advertisements can be seen. We recognize this presents a challenge for customers with distributed networks -- so we are exploring the capability for the [Aironet WLAN] access point to also snoop Bonjour traffic. With this flexible solution, a "Bonjour Detector" AP can be placed anywhere in the network and snoop Bonjour for all of the devices on that wired segment while sending relevant service entries back to the controller's master database.

In the future we are also looking at leveraging other Cisco devices in the network that can perform wired-side snooping and improve the reach of the solution.

Does Cisco have any plans to incorporate the Bonjour GW in their IOS firmware running on their Catalysts?

This is a logical place for wired-side Bonjour snooping. However we cannot comment on official roadmap positions.

In the webinar, Cisco said it will use filtering to restrict which clients can see which services (Apple TV's, etc). What will Cisco use to filter Bonjour requests?

The filtering options are:
· Per WLAN/SSID
· Per VLAN or AP Group
· Per Interface Group (which is a group of VLANs pooled together).

A Bonjour service policy can be created and applied on any one of the above criteria. In the future, we will support per-user Bonjour service policies which will come as a RADIUS attribute from the AAA server.

Will Cisco support location-aware service discovery to limit the number of, for example, Apple TVs that might show up on an iPhone or iPad in response to a discover request?

We are actively investigating how the physical location of the wireless client can be used to provide a pin-pointed service list with only the Apple TVs, printers, etc. which are nearby. No comment on availability yet.

Does roaming work with the Gateway, and if so how?

Yes, Layer 3 roaming across controllers works to ensure users moving amongst access points on different controllers continue to see the devices they saw on the original controller. The Bonjour services on the anchor controller will be displayed to the client included both wired and wireless devices.

here was some confusion about whether the Gateway actually use multicast to deliver Bonjour services to clients. One person said it does not. Is this correct?

This is correct, the controller sends the response back to the client via unicast so that other clients do not hear any services they are not supposed to see. For subsequent connections after service discovery (such as an iPad mirroring the screen to the Apple TV) these are unicast, and between the two end devices, using Apple's own protocol.

How specific can you be about the beta release of the Gateway?

Beta for the v7.4 release will be in Oct/Nov of this year [2012].

Cisco readying a new Nexus switch

Nexus 3500 will feature ultra low latency, target Infiniband

Cisco has another Nexus Ethernet data center switch in the works, this one with ultra-low latency and a more formidable rival to Infiniband.

Details on the Nexus 3500 are unavailable. Cisco wouldn't discuss it when asked about an online ad seeking a software engineer for it.

"This is to be announced later," a Cisco spokesperson e-mailed. "No details to share yet."

Sources, however, say the Nexus 3500 will feature 250 nanosecond port-to-port latency and integrated network address translation. They say it will give Infiniband a run for the money, especially when combined with a new NIC from Cisco called usNIC.

"If this product does come out with latency as stated, it will dominate the silicon industry slamming down on Broadcom and more importantly Fulcrum," the source says. "But also compete with Mellanox and close the gap with Infiniband. Cisco will be untouchable in ultra low latency switching."

RedHat has apparently run tests of usNIC with its MRG-M high performance computing software. Slides 16-18 of this presentation appear to show performance improvements of MRG-M when running usNIC vs. Infiniband.

Red Hat was not immediately available for comment. But our source said it, along with the Nexus 3500, could be a viable alternative to Infiniband.

"That, combined with this new Nexus 3500 having 250ns latency would be a compelling solution against Infiniband," the source said. "If Cisco launches Nexus 3500 in the next few months and combines usNIC in the launch it will finally be the first Ethernet solution that can compete against (Infiniband)...(and) shows Cisco intent to kill Infiniband with Ethernet."

Mellanox is a leading Infiniband networking vendor. Requests to the company for comment were not answered by posting time.

Cisco currently offers the Nexus 3000 line for low-latency, top-of-rack switching targeted at high-frequency financial trading, as well as the Nexus 7000, 5000 and 2000 lines for data center fabric switching.

Cisco Intros New UCS Blade, Rack Servers

The new Intel-based systems are aimed at a wide range of workloads, from virtualization and databases to Web 2.0 and big data.

Cisco Systems is expanding its converged Unified Computing Systems portfolio, adding four new Intel-powered servers that are primarily aimed at scale-out environments as well as a new virtual networking card.

The offerings include two new rack servers and a blade server powered by Intel’s new Xeon E5-2400 chips for dual-socket systems, and another blade system running on Xeon E5-4600 processors, for four-socket servers. Intel released the two chip families in May, complementing the Xeon E5-2600 processors that were launched in March.

Cisco officials are leveraging them to expand the reach of their UCS line of converged data center solutions, which the company first rolled out three years ago. The networking giant has since seen its UCS business grow rapidly, now reaching more than 11,000 customers and having an annual run rate of almost $1.3 billion. Cisco also has more than 2,000 channel partners selling the solution.

Cisco CCNA Training, Cisco CCNA Certification

The new systems come three months after Cisco launched UCS 3.0, which included new servers powered by the Xeon E5-2600 chips, expanded fabric capabilities and new integrated networking and virtualization features. The latest offerings complement what Cisco already has done with the solution, according to Todd Brannon, product marketing manager for unified computing at Cisco.

“These new servers round out the UCS portfolio with an even stronger set of products optimized for scale-out and light general-purpose computing as well as a new price/performance [four-socket] category in the mid-range,” Brannon said in a June 18 blog post.

In addition, the new Virtual Interface Card (VIC) will add capabilities to what Brannon said is an important part of the overall story around the UCS.

“One of the key differentiators of UCS is the way in which high-capacity server network access has been aggregated through Cisco Virtual Interface Cards and infused with built-in high-performance virtual networking capabilities,” he wrote. “In ‘pre-UCS’ server system architectures, one of the main design considerations was the type and quantity of physical network adapters required. … In UCS, I/O is effectively taken off the table as a design worry because every server gets its full USRDA [U.S. recommended daily allowance] of networking through the VIC: heaping portions of bandwidth, rich with Fabric Extender technology vitamins that yield hundreds of Ethernet and FC adapters through one physical device. Gone are the days of hemming and hawing over how many mezz card slots your blade has or how many cards you’re going to need to feed that hungry stack of VM’s on your rack server. This simplification changes things for the better because it takes a lot of complication out of the equation.”

Introducing the UCS in 2009 marked a significant change in direction for Cisco. The all-in-one data center solution not only was featuring Cisco’s networking technology, but also Cisco-branded servers, as well as storage capabilities from EMC and NetApp and virtualization from VMware. Cisco became a server vendor, putting it in direct competition with companies like Hewlett-Packard, which had been a strong partner.

It also helped dial up the competition in the converged data center market, sparking others like HP and IBM to grow their offerings. Earlier this month, Dell unveiled its Converged Blade Data Center, which combines Dell’s 12th Generation PowerEdge servers, new EqualLogic storage blade arrays and Force10 MXL blade switching.

For its new servers, Cisco is leveraging the work Intel is doing with processors, Cisco’s Bannon said. The new servers, which are aimed at such tasks as Web 2.0, big data and mainstream IT infrastructure, include the UCS B22 M3 blade and C22 M3 and C24 M3 rack systems, all powered by Intel Xeon E5-2400 processors.

In addition, Cisco is rolling out the B420 M3 blade system, which runs on Intel’s Xeon E5-4600 chips and is aimed at such workloads as virtualization and databases. The system supports 1.5 terabytes of memory and, with the new VIC1225 technology, offers up to 160G bps of I/O bandwidth.

“Intel has brought four socket server options, formerly the province of the mission-critical, ‘EX end of the spectrum, down into the mainstream,” Bannon wrote. “An example of this is our new UCS B420 blade. So if you want four socket core count and performance but don’t necessarily need the comprehensive RAS [reliability, availability, serviceability] features of an EX class system, you now have a price/performance optimized solution for that need.”

Intel introduced the Xeon E5-2400 and E5-4600 chips to ensure that the company is offering processor technology for a wide range of workloads, according to Boyd Davis, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Data Center Infrastructure Group.

“The data center’s a complicated place,” Davis said in an interview with Cisco taped during the Cisco Live conference. “Just delivering application performance isn’t enough. You have to deliver balance, and you really have to fit into the environments that customers are deploying today.”

OpenFlow and Cisco OPEN's feedback loop

The northbound SDN interface may limit OpenFlow's role and thwart commoditization

During its SDN conference call this week with Morgan Stanley and other participants, Cisco officials talked often about how a "feedback loop" is vital in its vision of a programmable network. This feedback loop would provide analytical data on users, sessions and applications gathered from the network to define policies and orchestration routines to be programmed back into the network.

The feedback loop is integral to Cisco's SDN architecture - the Open Programmable Environment for Networking, or Cisco OPEN. With a southbound interface, policy, orchestration, operational support and billing support applications tell the network what to do; but a northbound interface takes intelligence from the network to share with those applications so the applications themselves can make intelligent programming decisions based on that network intelligence.

RELATED: Cisco software defined-networking products on tap in June
The northbound interface might be the key to Cisco's SDN strategy, as Brad Casemore points out here. OpenFlow is more of a southbound interface that directs switches from a centralized controller. The Open Networking Foundation, of which Cisco is an active participant, is looking to ruggedize and standardize OpenFlow as much as possible for this task.

RELATED: OpenFlow, Software-Defined Networking and the Enterprise WAN
But Cisco doesn't want its switches to be dumb servants to a one-way southbound SDN interface, be it OpenFlow or any other. Cisco prides itself on building intelligent networks. It invests billions in custom ASICs and software to build up and maintain intelligence in its hardware, and it makes many more billions back from its 70% share in switching, 80% share in enterprise routing and nearly 60% share in service provider routing. This is the value that Cisco refers to when it says, as it did this week in the Morgan Stanley call, that SDNs should harness the entire value of the underlying network.

This is why Cisco is proposing Cisco OPEN, which is intended to open up the network with APIs at layers other than just the data and control plane, which is where the popular OpenFlow protocol is targeted. Cisco may cede the southbound data/control plane interface to OpenFlow; but all other interfaces at all other layers in Cisco OPEN are likely to be Cisco, including the northbound one that collects network analytics and delivers it to the control applications and creates the feedback loop -- or to Cisco, the value of SDN.

Cisco said during the Morgan Stanley call that SDNs and OpenFlow will not commoditize its hardware. Hardware will only be commoditized when value is not created. OpenFlow in and of itself does not create value for Cisco, even though IDC says OpenFlow hardware, software and services will be a $2 billion market by 2016. But OpenFlow within the context of Cisco OPEN does create value for Cisco.

Rather than commanding - controlling -- the SDN army, OpenFlow becomes just another foot soldier with a specific role in the lower ranks of the Cisco OPEN feedback loop.

Cisco all but kills Cius tablet computer

Cisco discontinues Cius investment and development in the face of BYOD, cloud computing

Cisco is slowly killing off its Cius business tablet less than a year after it started shipping.

The Android-based collaboration tool, which featured a 7-inch touchscreen and was not intended to challenge more consumer-oriented tablets such as the Apple iPad, fell victim to the BYOD trend and cloud computing, Cisco said in a blog post.

The post, authored by OJ Winge, senior vice president of Cisco's TelePresence Technology Group, states that Cisco will discontinue investment and development of the tablet, which we reviewed in February.

NOT TODAY; OR EVER? 10 Compelling Apps for Cisco Cius

"... 95% of organizations surveyed allow employee-owned devices in some way, shape or form in the office, and, 36% of surveyed enterprises provide full support for employee-owned devices. These stats underscore a major shift in the way people are working, in the office, at home and on-the-go, a shift that will continue to gain momentum.

"Based on these market transitions, Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what's available today. However, as we evaluate the market further, we will continue to offer Cius in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases," the post states.

Cisco will instead "double down" on software offerings like its Jabber and WebEx products for more popular tablets and smartphones supporting a variety of operating systems, the blog states. Cisco unveiled a version of Jabber for the iPad at the Enterprise Connect conference earlier this year.

"We will leverage key learnings and key collaboration experiences native to Cius in our other collaboration products," Winge states in his post.

Cisco has been discontinuing disappointing products over the past year, specifically in consumer-oriented collaboration. It killed its Flip pocket videocam and its umi home TelePresence unit.

According to Network World's Cius review, the tablet was only available through the Cisco partner network. It cost less than $750 for an endpoint and less than $350 for a media station, for a total of under $1,100.

Market timing played a key role in Cius' demise, according to Ted Schadler of Forrester Research. As Cisco was conceiving, developing and preparing to launch Cius into the enterprise, corporate workers were already bringing their iPads to work.

"As you look at Cisco's business and portfolio, did (offering a tablet endpoint) make sense at this point in time?" Schadler asked. "There had been three Christmases of CEOs bringing their iPads to work."

There's no longer a question of what tablet enterprises will use at work; it's not a question of how to support it, Schadler said.

"Now the focus is around collaboration tools," he said. "All Cisco needs is a client on an iPad, not an actual device."

And with the exploding trend of BYOD, the business case of developing dedicated hardware sitting on an executive's desk becomes "much less interesting," Schadler says. "Cisco should be end-point agnostic, focusing instead on integration in the back-end."

Cellphone vibration syndrome and other signs of tech addiction

New book, iDisorder, looks at the dangers and offers advice for dealing with obsession

Computerworld - It turns out that the phantom cellphone vibration syndrome is fairly common. Ask around. See if you can find someone who believed the smartphone in their pocket was vibrating but found when they checked, there was nothing new. No call. No text.

There's a growing body of research on phantom vibrations and many of the other problems associated with technology obsession, all of which is explored by Larry Rosen, a professor of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in his new book, iDisorder.

Cisco CCNA Training, Cisco CCNA Certification

Best CCNA Training and CCNA Certification and more Cisco exams log in to Certkingdom.com

Rosen, who earned his bachelors degree in mathematics before getting a Ph.D in psychology, examines technology's impact on our lives. His book, which combines the latest research with his own experience, anecdote and observation, warns about obsessive technological use and offers practical advice for keeping tech at bay.

In this interview, Rosen talked about some of the issues associated with unhealthy, or least unreasonable, levels of tech obsession.

What is iDisorder or technology addiction? Is it obsessive compulsive disorder, narcissism, depression, anxiety - none of this or all of the above? iDisorder is any psychological disorder that appears to be either caused by or potentially exacerbated by your relationship with media and technology. But, in fact, it's all of the ones you mentioned. Interacting with our technology can make us display signs and symptoms of everything ranging from depression to mania to narcissism to voyeurism - you name it. The research is all showing that it appears that these kinds of technologies can, unless we're watching what we're doing, lead to these kinds of issues.

If I check my cell phone every few minutes, what does that indicate? I would want to know what you are doing and what you are feeling when you do that. If you pick up your phone and check your text messages, and you go 'I got to text right back to this person,' I would suggest that what you're feeling is anxiety about not being able to check in. That's one of the underlying issues of obsessive compulsive behaviors. If you got on your phone every couple of minutes and I saw you make this big smile and say 'I got an email from an old friend and it felt so good,' then I would say that it's probably an addictive kind of behavior. It's that split between a level of addiction, meaning we're trying to get pleasure, versus our level of obsession or compulsion, meaning we're trying to reduce our anxiety.

Talk about the phantom vibration syndrome, where it feels as if the cell phone is vibrating but it isn't. Why does this happen? We're just starting to see research on this. I think it's a fascinating phenomenon. I think it comes again from anxiety. Our body is always in waiting to anticipate any kind of technological interaction, which usually comes from a smartphone. With that anticipatory anxiety, if we get any neurological stimulation, our pants rubbing against our leg for example, you might interpret that through the veil of anxiety, as 'Oh, my phone is vibrating."

And this syndrome is fairly common? Yes, I have not found anybody whom I've talked to, particularly males, because they carry their phone in their pocket, who can admit that it has never happened. There are a lot of people who say they are patting their pocket all day long.

Are phantom cell phone vibrations a reason for worry? The worry part comes from this: Is it overwhelming anxiety and is that anxiety getting in the way of anything else in your life? Most of the people will report that what it does is it gets in the way of their social relationships, because they are constantly focusing on reducing the anxiety about what they're missing out on their phone. At dinner, they're not paying attention to their family and kids. When they go out, they are not paying attention to a movie because they are always on edge and worried. If they are at a family gathering they are always checking their phone constantly. If it's that severe, then it's time to re-conceptualize what you are doing.

Is there a metric that tells you whether you are overusing information technology, or is it only a problem if it interferes with your social interactions? If it interferes with a lot of things -- your social interactions, your work product and your family responsibilities - those are the kinds of signs that you always look for in addiction and compulsive behavior.

How do I recognize this problem in the workplace? You recognize it in co-workers who can't go more than five minutes at a meeting without checking their phone. You recognize it in co-workers who get constantly distracted in the middle of a task, and the distraction usually comes from an email or text, or an internal need to check something on the Web. It really comes down to the business world as sort of rudeness, or inattentiveness, or lack or productivity or reduced productivity.

Are there steps managers can take to mitigate it in the workplace? Absolutely. What I think managers need to do is the following: If you are having problems at your meetings, which most managers are because your staff constantly has their Blackberries, iPhones, laptops and iPads there, and you know that they aren't just taking notes, what you need to be doing is something I call a tech break. This means that everybody brings their technology to the meeting, and gets one minute to two minutes to check in with your technology, and then you turn it off and upside down in front of you. And usually starting after 15 minutes of meeting, there is another one to two minute tech break, and then 15 minutes of more meeting and then another tech break. This starts to train your staff that the downside of not checking in every five seconds isn't as bad as they thought. Eventually you can lengthen the time without breaks to 20 minutes, to 25 and to 30 minutes - potentially 30 minutes. I've never seen anybody get it longer than 30.

Is this something businesses are beginning to do formally? Absolutely. It takes some training because their staffs are so hooked [into] these devices that it's no immediate success, but eventually people get it.

Are people who work in information technology at greater risk of developing problems in this area? No, I don't think so. I think everybody is. On some level, software developers may even have an easier time, because they have a bit more focus or more need to focus. But I can honestly say the research shows that software developers focus about three to five minutes before they switch tasks, and that's about what we find with students and medical students studying. I think we're at the point where we carry something in our pockets that is more powerful than any of us ever imagined.

A lot of companies are developing wired workplaces, in the sense that employees can get access to their work regardless of whether it's a company-owned device or a personal smartphone. Won't the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) push exacerbate the problem? I do believe it probably will. I think it's (BYOD) a good idea. Businesses are starting to realize that it's nice to have a dedicated Blackberry just for your work, but it's also nice to have your employees to be on 24-by-7 because they are carrying the device they're using. I do think that's going to be a problem because then you're multiplying it by two, your device is both your personal device and business device so there is twice as much free-floating anxiety.

How do you counterattack that? There are two things you can do. You don't have to carry your device 24-by-7. What I suggest is you develop your own tech break. About every couple of hours find one way to get away from all of it, phones, computers, everything - for 10 to 15 minutes. You do what neuroscientist call 'resetting your brain.' There are tons of activities that we know reset your brain. Taking a walk in nature, looking at clouds, looking at a picture book (not on your computer), exercising for a few minutes, laughing, talking to somebody, speaking a foreign language, playing a musical instrument. Our brain is at a constant, high-activation level and we need time to let it mellow, rest and reset, so then we can better process the information.

A lot of people use LinkedIn and Facebook for professional as well as social reasons, but you argue that the reliance or heavy use of these platforms can lead to problems. Why is that? First, let me say that I'm a fan of social media. I find it an amazingly powerful tool. Having said that, I think that the way social media is right now, it is promoting obsessive behaviors, it is promoting the constant need to check in. I am the worst at this. I am constantly checking in to see if there are comments on my site, because I want to jump on them. I am constantly checking in on Facebook, and one of the things that I have had to do is moderate this kind of behavior. Social media is intensely compelling.

Are there societal dangers? The major societal issue is not about the social media. The social media research tends to be coming out as flipping to the positive side. We are getting more (from social media) than we might be losing. My concern is smartphones, which I refer to as WMDs (wireless mobile devices) but I think they are also potential weapons of mass destruction. Where I see the problem is in two situations. One is in the family, the other in gatherings of friends, where you are spending too much time checking your phone and responding to things on your phone. I don't care if you claim you are multitasking. You cannot be attending to a text message and getting what your friend across the table in the restaurant is telling you completely. You might get the words, but you're not getting the context, the emotions and the feelings. You're not really paying attention. The same thing happens in the family. I see these devices as being very divisive to the family unless we set very clear guidelines about when they are acceptable and when they are not. As soon your kid gets an iPhone you may as well be talking to him about the right time use it and the wrong time.

"It's certainly not flying to unprecedented levels," said Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with ZK Research. "This underscores the thesis that many investors are taking a wait-and-see approach."

He added that while many people may be surprised Facebook's stock price hasn't taken off yet, they really shouldn't be.
"I think it's surprising a lot of people, but I think it should have been expected," said Kerravala. "There are a lot of questions about Facebook.... How are they going to monetize mobile? Can [CEO Mark] Zuckerberg run a public company?"

Twenty-eight year-old Zuckerberg started the day by ringing the Nasdaq opening bell from company headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.

After that, though, there were a few hitches.

Trading was supposed to start at 11 a.m. ET, but the Nasdaq delayed it by about half an hour in order to handle the flood of buy and sell orders that were coming through for Facebook's stock.

Once trading actually began, the stock started out strong, trading at $42 per share, $4 above the official offering price of $38 the company set Thursday.

However, instead of rising from there, Facebook's share price began to fizzle, and dropped to below $39 just 20 minutes after trading began. Once the price hit $38, about 10 to 15 minutes later, the company's underwriters stepped in to bolster it and hold the price floor at $38, reported the Wall Street Journal.

TV commentators and online headlines began using words like "underperform" and "disappointing."

Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, said people may be jumping the gun. He contends that Facebook's stock price is hovering around where it started this morning because it was priced appropriately.

"I can say that if your IPO doesn't go up or down very much, then you priced it right," he added. "At this point, it's all about perception and expectation. The stock price is just a noise meter."

Regardless of the ups and downs the stock is going through today, there's been a huge amount of interest and excitement around the event.

As trading began, people were standing around Times Square in New York City, staring up at giant screens showing Facebook's stock numbers. At the same time, Twitter momentarily staggered under the crush of tweets about the IPO.

As noteworthy as this day has been for many in the financial and tech industry, it's been a tough day for other social networking companies.

The Wall Street Journal reported soon after trading of Facebook's stock began that LinkedIn's stock price was down 2.6% and Groupon was down 6%. Pandora also was down, dropping 5%.

Zynga, though, might have fared the worst. The online gaming company's share price toppled a full 13%, landing at $7.17, according to MarketWatch . Trading on that stock was halted, later reinstated, then halted for a second time.
